Pertamina Trans Kontinental's Program Successfully Enhances Biodiversity in the Kariangau Mangrove Area

Balikpapan, August 24, 2026 – PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental’s (PTK) Mangrove Revitalization Program (PORTAL) has successfully enriched biodiversity within the operational area of Pertamina Trans Kontinental Shorebase Tanjung Batu (PSTB), located in Kariangau, West Balikpapan District, Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan. The biodiversity data, gathered from ongoing monitoring and evaluation conducted by PSTB, demonstrates positive indicators that the mangrove conservation zone plays a vital role in providing habitats and supporting environmental sustainability.

Nasruli, Vice President of HSSE at PTK, stated that the mangrove revitalization program in Kariangau aims to preserve the ecological, economic, and physical functions of the mangrove ecosystem. This ensures that coastal areas remain healthier, resilient against coastal erosion, and conducive to environmental balance. Enhancing coastal ecosystem health is a primary focus for PTK as an integrated maritime services company.

"The PORTAL program is one of PTK’s flagship environmental conservation initiatives established in 2022 to provide a thriving sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. As part of our Environmental and Social Responsibility (TJSL) commitments, PTK Shorebase Tanjung Batu regularly carries out monitoring and evaluation across the mangrove area to accurately assess the real-world impact of this initiative," Nasruli explained.

According to the latest evaluation results, Nasruli noted significant growth across both flora and fauna biodiversity. In the fauna category, a total of 49 species across 33 families were recorded. Avian diversity saw the most substantial increase at 48%, rising from 25 bird species in 2022 to 37 species during the 2026 evaluation. Additionally, herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) diversity increased from 6 to 9 species, while mammal species rose from 2 to 3.

In the flora category, plant diversity surged by 61%, growing from 13 species in 2022 to 21 species in 2026. Tree growth habits dominated the area (57%), with Tall-stilt Mangrove (Rhizophora apiculata) and Black Mangrove (Avicennia alba) emerging as the predominant species critical for soil substrate stabilization and carbon sequestration.

"The identified growth in species diversity offers tangible proof of the PTK Shorebase Tanjung Batu mangrove area’s essential role as a stronghold for Indonesia’s biodiversity. Driven by these positive findings, PTK reaffirms its commitment to sustained ecosystem conservation, safeguarding the natural habitats of endemic wildlife, and fostering a healthy environment that delivers tangible ecological and communal benefits," Nasruli added.

The program's evaluation adheres to integrated scientific principles of ecosystem management, deploying methodologies such as line transects, Point Count/Indices Point of Abundance (IPA), Visual Encounter Surveys (VES), and camera trap deployments across four natural mangrove cluster formations: the Sonneratia Cluster, the Sonneratia–Avicennia Cluster, the Avicennia–Rhizophora Cluster, and the Rhizophora Cluster.
